Is Micro-Needling Effective for Reducing Skin Pores?

By Dr. Janani Palanivel on 04-08-2022

Pores are small openings in the skin which are present all over the body. Humans will have pores, where they have hair. The palms of your hand and sole are the only parts that don’t have pores.

These pores produce sebum, an oily substance that acts as a natural moisturizer that protects the skin from external environmental hazards. However, sometimes the skin produces an excess amount of sebum. This excess production of sebum will result in clogged pores. Skin showing excessive sebum production show enlarged pores, especially on the face.  Sometimes, after the pores are clear of sebum or skin debris, it will return to its natural form to appear as enlarged pore. Similarly with aging, the loss of elastin and collagen under the skin, will leave the pores appear more prominent.  Enlarged pores on the facial skin, gives an appearance of a textured skin. However, textured skin is generally not considered aesthetically appealing, hence there remains a demand for pore reducing treatment and creams.

Micro-needling is the process of rolling microneedles on the skin to induce collagen production. With aging, collagen and elastin reduces under the skin and the skin appears lax with pores and fine lines. Micro-needling is a non-invasive method to induce collagen production under the skin.

The idea behind this treatment is to create micro-injury in the skin, to activate the skin’s natural healing and regeneration, thus reducing the appearance of the skin pores.
