Hair Loss Treatment And Conditions

Hair is an epidermal structure arranged all over the skin surface except in palms, soles and mucosa. Hair is an aesthetic asset to human beings. Healthy thick hair suggests virility and youthfulness. Hair is pivotal in protection, thermal regulation and sensory functions.

Most men and women experience hair loss. Normally, we shed 50-100 hairs a day. Some people notice hair re-growth after a period and some do not regain their lost hair. Losing hair and baldness at a very young age causes social inhibition.

Similar to hair loss, excessive hair (Hirsutism) over body and face in females is a cosmetic and psychosocial concern. Hirsutism could be a sign of internal medical condition and requires necessary attention.

A consultation with a dermatologist is required to uncover the cause of any hair related disorders before any irreversible damage occurs.

Hair related disorders:

Hair Shedding and Hair Thinning

Hair fall is by far the most common hair related disease. The common causes are listed below:

Hair disorders :

- Androgenetic alopecia: This is the most common cause of hair loss in most men and women. It most frequently occurs at the age of 30s-40s. However, it can also occur at a very young age of 20s. About 80 million people in India have androgen induced hair loss and thinning.

- Alopecia areata: It is an immune-mediated scalp disease where the body attacks its own hair. Patients will have a patchy smooth area of hair loss on the scalp. Sometimes the patients will notice a spontaneous hair growth in the area. However, most of the time patients will require some topical therapy or injections to stimulate hair growth.

- Cicatricial (scarring) alopecia: This disease destroys the hair follicle resulting in scarring over the hair loss area. Generally, patients with such disorder will not regain the lost hair. However, there are treatments to prevent further such inflammation which destroys the hair follicle.

Medical conditions causing hair fall:

Frequently in such situations, spontaneous hair re-growth can occur in 6months to 12months. However, certain hair care therapies could be beneficial.
